We all know how we hate pimples. But doctors highly don’t recommend not taking any medications for skin and acne problems. Taking medications for your acne problems while pregnant can harm you and your unborn baby. Here are a couple of acne medications that are considered high-risk to pregnant women:

Isotretinoin

  • It’s an oral acne medication, and can cause birth defects (facial defects, heart problems, central nervous system problems, miscarriages and infant deaths).

Tetracycline

  • It’s an antibiotic treatment for acne, but not recommended during pregnancy. It is best to consult with your doctor or a dermatologist before taking this medication (can cause bone growth and teeth discoloration in fetuses).

Tretinoin

  • It’s a cream medication for acne problems. This is a low risk acne medication but you are still considered to consult with your doctor or a dermatologist before taking this medication while pregnant.

There are other natural, drug free treatment you can do to treat your skin and acne problems. You can use a very mild soap or water base soap to clean your face in the morning and before bedtime to prevent breakouts (using water based soap can keep your face moisturized and prevent skin from drying out). Here are a couple of suggestions:

  • Wash face at least twice a day, don’t over scrub your face (over scrubbing can irritate your skin and more prone to blemishes and breakouts).

  • Wash your pillow cases, make-up brushes, towels, washcloths and bed sheets weekly basis in hot water to prevent bacteria and germs from your face.

  • Do not use any harsh soaps; soaps that contain fragrances.

  • You can use a dab of toothpaste on a pimple to dry it out (works really well).

  • After washing face, you can run a piece of ice cube on face before bedtime (it makes your pores smaller and can prevent blemishes to your skin).

  •  Use very mild, water based soaps (ivory and dove) to clean face.

  • Don’t wash your face with really hot water, instead make it so that it is a little cool to the skin (using too warm water to wash your face can cause your skin to dry out, and can get skin irritation).

  • Use Cetaphil moisturizer (keeps skin well hydrated, smooth, gentle to the skin and help clear up blemishes and skin irritations).

  • Take vitamins that contain Vitamin A, B6, and Zinc (it helps prevent skin blemishes and acne’s).

  • Keep a healthy diet, eat more veggies, fruits and drink plenty of water, about eight glasses a day can help you skin look better (avoid caffeinated drinks, too much chocolate, spicy foods and try to limit processed foods; canned foods).

Make sure you consult with your doctor or dermatologist first before talking any acne medications while pregnant. Also, it would be better and highly recommended to take any acne medications after your baby is born.
